All of whom welcomed me with open arms
For the past year, I have been taking one-on-one Spanish lessons twice a week at a recognized language school. Although I learned a great deal of grammar and verb conjugation, I still could not hold a simple conversation in Spanish.
On a friend’s suggestion, I began studying with Ammy at The Adventure of Learning Spanish school, an institution that focuses on spoken Spanish through the use of everyday conversations and practical scripts.
Working with Ammy helped me transition from a classroom setting to speaking Spanish with greater confidence and fluency. To further improve my speaking skills, I spent seven days at her family’s homestead in La Barrita, just outside of Petatlan.
This homestay greatly increased my ability to speak Spanish thanks to the support of her extended family – her sister, nieces, mother, father, aunts, uncles and her grandmother – all of whom welcomed me with open arms.
A one-week full immersion experience is not for everyone. It was challenging at times, but I learned a tremendous amount. I look forward to returning to visit her wonderful family and continue developing my language skills.
